Last Friday, the FCC finally decided to switch off all analog TV signal and went digital. Now if you’re like me you’ve ignored everything about this “Switch” and suddenly find yourself without a television to watch. So what’s a frugal American to do in these economic hard times? Well you can get a cable or satellite set up, but with the average cable fee being over the price of say a full tank of gas per month (just for the basic package),  who wants to spend that? This is especially considering that you have a perfectly good working internet connection and presumably at least one computer lying around.

The following alternatives are a cheap and often free way to avoid having the cable guy run wires through your house.

Growing up I was a comics fanatic. I would anxiously tear open the comics section of our local newspaper to read all my favorites, and even those I didn’t really understand. Back then I didn’t understand how much effort and work went into getting a comic strip syndicated or how much blood and tears went into the strips and the endless fights with censors who always cut the comics down.

Now that I’m older I’ve come to realize what’s in the funny pages as a kid was only the tip of the iceberg. Of course back then there was no Internet and thus no web comics. But that’s different now and most people in the newspaper comics industry don’t pull out their comics when they retire. They let them keep running and most newspapers are fine with it. This makes it harder for new artists to get their comics syndicated and that’s where the Internet comes into play.

In the last 10 years, the web comics field has exploded. This is mainly because the most active group on the Internet today were the most active readers of comics of yesterday. And so I present to you my top 5 web comics that you’re not reading but should be. These comics are uncensored and completely original and because of that very hilarious.

One of the things that I love and despise most in the world is the Disney Corporation. I understand that it’s evil, but there’s something about it that is so appealing, and has been since I was a kid. From that childhood love grew an adult fascination with everything Disney which has ultimately led me to a lot of facts, myths and mysteries about the corporation and the theme parks they run. Hopefully this article will pique your interest as well.

Facts, Myths, and Mysteries about Disney Theme Parks

No One Has Ever Officially Died on Disney Property:

According to legend, whenever there is a death on a Disney park, the paramedics are not allowed to declare the person dead until they have left the Disney property.

Walt Originally Planned Epcot to be a Model Utopia

We all knew Walt Disney was brilliant, but a couple of his ideas were way off the charts, like super crazy stuff. One of the best documented examples of this was the original plan for Epcot Center. The full video can be found on a DVD series called Tomorrow Land in which Walt proceeds to explain that he hopes to construct a city, resort, and urban sprawl that will provide everything for the residents of his utopia. At the center of the city was a giant skyscraper which would serve as office buildings and a resort hotel for the guests. On the outskirts of this would be acres of parks for the residents, then outside of this would be a suburban sprawl of homes. There wasn’t a need for roads here, instead there were trails leading to the residents’ respective homes. The residents of this utopia don’t need to drive anywhere. They were expected to ride a series of Monorails and small 2 person cars on tracks called people movers that never stopped being in motion. Walt even planned a series of industrial parks for the more blue color workers that were accessible by monorail. This is not to say that you didn’t need a car, for residents of the utopia there was an immense parking garage for residents and guests beneath the central sky scraper. Of course Walt’s dream of this utopia was never realized and in its place we have a giant sphere.

There is a System of Tunnels Beneath Disney World

During the early days of Disneyland, Walt continuously had his dream of a seamless magical world destroyed by seeing misplaced cast members. He often would find cowboys in Tomorrow Land, Jungle Cruise drivers in Fantasy Land and princesses in Adventure Land. Walt’s solution to this was to build a series of tunnels with different levels beneath Disney World. Not only allowing the cast members to move around, eat, and take breaks, but also for merchandise and food to be moved around the park, as well as delivery trucks to be loaded and unloaded. The tunnels have different portals throughout the park where the cast members and deliveries can enter and exit the tunnels. Read the rest of this article »

When I was growing up my parents always reassured me that once I got out into the real world, the social status I had acquired in high school would soon dissolve into the night. We would all just be people. No longer would there be jocks, nerds and preps. Of course that’s not true at all, and as I grew older I became more comfortable with my nerdy habits, and have ultimately come to accept who I am. This list is a compilation of other people who have come to terms with who they are. Nerds are one of the most influential group of people in the world… I just wish someone would have told the girls I liked in high school that.

Which MMO is right for you?

Right now the Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) Role Playing Game Industry is a battlefield, filled with screaming Orcs, caped super heroes, and Majestic Elves setting fields a flame and other such creatures buying for your attention and ultimately for your checkbook. But in this fast paced world where, you, the player can make a fortune looting dungeons and defeating enemies you should know which game is right for you.

In order to figure out what MMO is right for you we need to assess what type of gamer you are, or think you will be. Most current MMO’s are based strongly on teams, these teams are primarily made up of other gamers. So if the game heavily relies on you going on quests with real people, I’ll make a note of it. The second element you need to take into consideration is whether or not you’re willing to pay a monthly or yearly fee for your gaming fix. Whether or not you’re willing to pay and ultimately how much you’re willing to pay will greatly affect which game you eventually pick up. The third element you need to take into consideration is how much time you’re willing to invest on the game. If you’re a freshmen in college, or better yet still in high school you no doubt have more free time to spend than someone who’s working 40 hours a week and this will affect which games you will be playing.

Granted each one of these games have many more elements to them than what I could even begin to go into here. And most certainly this article is not a be all end all list. Instead it’s a suggestion, if you disagree, feel hurt or angry that your favorite MMO was left out or want to suggest a game that we haven’t even heard of yet feel free to do so in the comments. Of course the games I mention here are not the only MMO’s out there either (WarHammer Online and Conan the Barbarian Online are the new kids on the block), but hey, these are great starting places for this conversation.
