Hlaska PhilosophyWhenever I look at pieces I’ve kept in my wardrobe for 10 or 15+ years, the universal thread has always been the overall quality of materials and workmanship.

With California-based Hlaska (a play on the words Hawaii and Alaska), you get that sense, the feeling you’re buying a piece you’ll actually keep for a long time. Their wallets, bags, and menswear set them apart because they come from a place uniquely inspired and thoughtfully designed with just the right amount of science and industrial influence.

In this Style Spotlight, we take a look at some Hlaska products we’ve singled out.

Oceanist Postal Messenger

Bags

Each bag made by Hlaska is designed by industrial designers who’ve blended equal parts style and utility. We’re especially enamored with the use of high quality materials coupled with custom made hardware. The finished look of each bag comes off as a refined statement of quality that isn’t overdone.

Oceanist Postal Messenger ($325)
Waxwear canvas postal messenger. Italian leather accents. Italian cotton lining. Custom turnlock hardware.

Nominal Billfold 9-Pocket

Wallets

If you’re looking for a new place to put your Benjamins, look no further than Hlaska’s wallet collection. They have a variety of styles to tailor to the right occasion and even have a Wallet Wizard which helps guide you to the proper wallet. Special attention has been paid to the details (like their thumb cutaway) and all their wallets are made with 100% Italian leather.

Nominal Billfold 9-Pocket ($155)
9 card-pocket billfold. 100% Italian vegetable-dyed leather with an exquisite Italian cotton lining. The billfold section is divided in two for organizing your cash however you like. The largest of the Hlaska line of wallets.

Apprentice Shirt

Menswear

Hlaska’s menswear collection covers many of the usual suspects well. They offer mostly casual staples for their own line (shirts, denim, pants, outerwear, belts) that are high on durability and classic style and have partnered with others (shoes, watches) to help you complete your look. We’ve singled out two pieces that show off their versatility.

Apprentice Shirt ($85)
Our Apprentice shirt doesn’t really fall into a classic or slim fit category. It fits a bit more slim than a classic fit shirt. It includes a welt pocket on the front, our Hlaska flag label and a two-button adjustable tab collar. Available in 5 colors.

Moleskin Jacket Grey

Moleskin Jacket Grey ($325)
Made from a soft, suede-like material, this multi-pocket jacket is stylish enough to wear as an outer shirt and water-resistant to wear as a jacket. Available in three colors and two liners, one for all-seasons, and a winter wool liner.

$325 for a messenger bag? It better have a mini netbook that comes with it inside. Why do these types of retailers cost so much for their stuff?

@JP I don’t think it’s just an average messenger bag. You’re right $325 is a little steep, but consider this a function of their superior quality. Don’t forget that it’s made in America.

It’s simple. Quality vs mass production. Some things you buy in cheaply and made in China and others you save up for and get from a spot like this. That same messenger bag can cost more than $1k EASILY by other premium brands.
