Whether you are cruising down the highway with the windows down and the warm wind blowing through your hair or strolling through the park on Saturday, I’ve got 5 new bands from one of Ploomy’s favorite music sites theSixtyone.com to add to your collection.
Futurecop
Futurecop was born by Manzur Iqbal from Manchester, England who teamed up with Peter Carroll from London to create a sound that is 80’s electronic ear candy. Songs like “NASA” and “Eyes Like the Ocean” recreate a vibe that makes your knee joint and neck vertebrae bounce to catchy beats that can be best described as a battle between a Unicorn and Tron. It’s pure audio joy and a pixie stick to your ear. Manzur “wanted to create a sound inspired by 80s teen flicks, especially the movies of John Hughes and Sci-fi cartoons like Transformers or Thundercats.” (thesixtyone.com) I’m not dressed like Maverick with my fighter suit on standing on an aircraft carrier but let me declare “Mission Accomplished.”
beta.beta
Beta.Beta has a great story about how they were formed in the summer of ‘07 on pure coincidence between Parixit and Adelin. The song “Sideshow” is hypnotic and makes you want to start a one man dance party on the spot. Even white boys like me will dance longing for any bit of rhythm in these legs. “Parixit walked into the teashop that Adelin was working at, and asked if she’d like to sing. She’d never been in a band before, and Parixit was at that point without a project. A pow-wow over ice cream and monster mix later led to the inception of beta.beta.” (thesixtyone.com) The compelling music equally matches this great story as well.
Joe Purdy
Joe Purdy, can I call you Joe?, has such a gripping sound that makes you want to pop in the songs “The City” and “Outlaws” and head out on the highway. It would be as if Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan got together, had a kid and called it Joe Purdy and I mean that in the best possible sense. He has the sound of Bruce with the lyrics of Bob. When we wonder what we’ll do when Bruce and Bob can no longer strum on the guitar or blow in the harmonica will be happy that Joe Purdy took the wheel. “Joe is an independent musician and his records are self-releases, just the way he likes it.” (JoePurdy.com) Grab a glass of your favorite whiskey on the rocks, sick back with Joe Purdy’s serenade and enjoy the glory days.
Peter Bradley Adams
PBA makes you want to open up a cold PBR and reflect. The song “Los Angeles” has a wonderful piano in it like it came right out of the movie “Road to Perdition”. A distinct mix of folk and country creates a serene tone that leaves a trace of wanting like wisps of smoke in the midnight. More on the downbeat and melancholy side Peter Bradley Adams is an excellent pick to round out your collection.
The Airborne Toxic Event
Speaking of Los Angeles, The Airborne Toxic Event came from the neighborhood of Los Feliz and is a five person ensemble of guitarist and keyboardist Steven Chen, bassist Noah Harmon, drummer Daren Taylor, keyboardist and violist Anna Bulbrook and singer and guitarist Mikel Jollett. Arguably more mainstream rock with their new release on Island Records, the Airborne Toxic Event doesn’t disappoint with their new EP that borders between sad searching and transcendentalism. Their exciting shows are said to be something to witness. “Wishing Well” creates momentous waves that rise and fall with emotional tides. Mikel Jollett and the gang will continue to bloom along with the springtime flowers.
