JJ Abrams Discusses Mystery
By stergeron in Inspiration, Videos
There are tons of articles in the blogoshere this week talking about JJ Abrams’ latest film Cloverfield. As you may know, Abrams was also the writer, director and producer of such hits as Alias, Lost and Mission Impossible III and is no stranger to stories which lean heavily on mystery.
Ever since the first teaser trailer came out for Cloverfield last year before the start of Transformers, there has been much speculation surrounding it. At the time it was still the unnamed JJ Abrams project featuring a mostly unknown cast. It is this sense of intrigue which has piqued the interest of many fans who are eager for the film’s closeup. Fast forward to today and you can tell that all the precise misdirection and vagueness was all a part of the grand plan for the marketing of the film.
In the Ted Talks clip above, Abrams takes us deep into what mystery is all about for him. He speaks of a box he received as a gift from his Grandfather almost 30 years ago that he’s never opened. To him the box represents infinite possibilities and later explains why that is sometimes more important than what is actually in the box itself.
Leave a comment and let me know what you think is in the mystery box.

There’s nothing in the box. It’s all a hoax/gimmick people. Lost season 1 was good, but show me one guy who watched Alias. It was a total chick show. All the guys were busy watching 24.

I thought JJ Abrams directed Cloverfield, but it turns out he only produced it. If you watch the movie, bring a plastic bag with you just in case. You’ll know what I mean…
