Dear MySpace, I am Moving to Facebook
Dear MySpace,
This is just to let you know that I will be vacating the premises at the end of the month. It has been great living here for the past 2 years. I am moving to a new community which is easier on my load times, where the washer and dryer (*cough applications) actually work and where more of my friends are moving to as well. I know I probably won’t get my safety deposit back since I messed up the code and decorated the place all weird, but that’s ok because it was my fault. I’m just glad that my new place I am moving to doesn’t allow me to do that.
Oh and by the way, my sister is graduating from middle school and I was wondering if she could have my spot even though I am moving out…would that be alright?
Sincerely,
Apt #9
Ok so it’s happening and the writings on the “Wall”. Facebook is officially taking over as the defacto social networking site. Well it’s not happening just yet as MySpace still has a huge edge at 214 million users to Facebook’s 58 million, but that’s besides the point. While MySpace is still the clear winner when it comes to number of users, Facebook is right there with search and daily traffic and is almost assuredly going to eclipse MySpace soon.
And when I say soon, I mean like tomorrow. Seriously is it me or just about every other day now we are receiving Facebook invites. The mass exodus of the 25 year old and up users has started. They are packing up their pictures, leaving the scandalous ones behind and heading over to Facebook. See you there.
SEARCH
As you can see on the Google Trends graph below (www.google.com/trends), Facebook has almost pulled even with MySpace in number of searches. You can also see that in the back half of this year there was a noticeable dip for MySpace and surge for Facebook.

TRAFFIC
According to Alexa (www.alexa.com), MySpace is ranked #6 and Facebook #7 as the most popular sites in the world.

Who wants to bet on January 1st Facebook will overtake search and traffic?

looks like your prediction was a lil premature. Then again you didn’t put a year so you might be talking about Jan 1st 2009.

Yah, premature is right. I still think Facebook will take it, but maybe needs another month. My theory is that the holidays had a little to do with the dip in the numbers. Let’s see what January brings when people begin to post all their pics from the holidays. Facebook’s “photo” application is far and away (like the movie with Kidman and Cruise) better than Myspaces’. Thanks for the comment.

I’m still not convinced Facebook is for me…plus, I don’t need yet another internet time suckage venue. :-P
Great posting! :-D Would love to see a follow-up posting if and when Facebook overtakes MySpace.

Always been sceptical about Facebook. To the point where me and some friends of mine use the word “Fecebook”.
While I’m all for trying to anonymously using our information like Google does, the thought of giving them the right to use all the information on the site as they please isn’t particularly alluring.
Nice graphs by the way!

I still haven’t signed up for either. I a little leery of the privacy rights implications. I just don’t want them using my data. Which seems silly considering that all my data is already out there somewhere.
